A rare hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship has left passengers and crew in a state of uncertainty and concern. The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, embarked on an Atlantic expedition from Argentina, but an outbreak of the Andes variant of hantavirus forced an emergency return to shore. The virus, typically spread through contact with infected rodents, has caused severe respiratory issues among a small number of passengers and crew, with three deaths and several confirmed or probable cases reported.
The outbreak has sparked a global repatriation effort, with most passengers and crew being evacuated to their home countries. Those remaining on the ship are sailing to the Netherlands for disinfection and further monitoring. The US, in particular, has been closely monitoring 18 American passengers and one British dual-national, with 16 of them at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and two at Emory University in Atlanta. The US authorities are also observing and testing individuals who were on board the ship and those who have come into close contact with confirmed cases.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reassured the public that the risk of hantavirus to the general population remains low. The Andes variant, which requires prolonged, close contact with someone who is already symptomatic, does not spread easily. However, the outbreak has raised concerns about the potential for human-to-human transmission, which is still under investigation.
The cruise ship made stops in remote territories, including St. Helena and Tristan da Cunha, before anchoring off Praia, Cape Verde, and later near Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Medical teams boarded the ship to run tests and evacuate passengers, with a French woman and a Spanish passenger testing positive for hantavirus upon their return.
The WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expects more cases to emerge due to the virus's incubation period, but assures that all passengers are in good hands with access to excellent medical care. The outbreak has prompted a global effort to contain the spread of the virus, which can cause severe and deadly respiratory disease, and health officials are working to prevent further transmission.
Despite the outbreak, health authorities emphasize that the risk of hantavirus to the general public remains very low. The US Department of Health and Human Services official, Dr. Brian Christine, stated that the Andes variant does not spread easily and requires prolonged, close contact with someone who is already symptomatic. This reassurance aims to prevent panic among the public, as the outbreak continues to unfold.
